The Key to Polished Looking Skin
Exfoliating is a very important step in skin care and all too often skipped. It is the key to healthy, fresh and polished skin. As we age the cell turnover rate slows down and our skin loses that reflective glow. Our goal with exfoliation is to remove the dead cells from the skin surface. It takes at least a few days for a sizeable amount of dead cells to accumulate. If you exfoliate too often you may be removing too many living cells and leave your skin feeling irritated and damaged. The frequency of exfoliation depends on your skin your skin type.
1. Dry skin – 2x/wk
2. Oily skin – 3x wk
3. Extremely oily skin – 2x/wk
Now you are probably wondering what type of exfoliator you should be using. You want to look for a natural exfoliator with fine granules that can polish your skin without being to abrasive. If you are not exfoliating your skin on a regular basis, your skin cannot absorb all the benefits your moisturizer/serum has to offer. This is due to your pores being clogged by the dead skin cells your skin has shed. Clogged pores make your skin look dry and dehydrated.
Some of the benefits of exfoliating are:
- It’s ability to improve texture of your dull skin, making it more vibriant.
- Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Sloughs off the dead skin cells your body has shed.
- Unclogs pores.
- Keeps skin healthy, thus helping to prevent break-outs.
- Helps retain your tan when you exfoliate before slapping on the sunscreen.
Skin expert Jamie Beuthin, owner of Masc Essentials educates men on the importane and benefits of exfoliation and shaving. Here is what he has to say:
“ Using a scrub to exfoliate your skin prior to shaving is an ideal to prepare your face for the best shave possible (or any part of your body for that matter). A scrub effectively smoothes the surface of your skin by removing dirt and dead skin cells for a less irritating shave; your razor is able to get closer so there is less chance of razor drag or burn. Regular use of a scrub also helps prevent ingrown hairs by opening congested pores thereby preventing facial hair from getting trapped beneath the skin.”
