Sun Sensitivity -What’s wrong with me?

june0509Ever wonder why you are sensitive to sunlight even though you have lathered tons of sunscreen? Some foods, drugs and cosmetic products can actually make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. This is known as a photosensitive reaction. Photosensitivity is an abnormal response of the skin to sun exposure making one more prone to sunburn, rashes, swelling and blistering. Foods that may trigger a photosensitive reaction include: lime, parsley, celery and parsnip. Even natural products such as essential oils of bergamont, cedar, lavender, rosemary, lime and lemon may induce a reaction. Certain drugs such as antibiotics, antihistamines and pain killers may react negatively to sunlight and damage the skin.

Here is a complete list of photosensitizing foods, herbs and drugs that do NOT mix with ultraviolet light and should be restricted prior to extended sun exposure. Beware tanners!
